Story of our city
The city Simbirsk has been based in 1648 for protection of eastern frontier of the Russian empire against nomad tribes. The fortified - city has been
constructed on a grief between the rivers Volga and Svijaga. In 1670 Simbirsk resisted to a siege of a month of 20,000 armies led by rebellious Cossack Stepan Razin. Other leader of Country war of 1773-1775 in Russia, Yemelyan Pugachyov, was imprisoned here before
execution. In 1870 here was born and has lived till 17 years the leader of a socialist revolution of 1917 Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin) . In honor of it Simbirsk has been renamed into Ulyanovsk in 1924.
In Simbirsk were born or lived known Russian writers : N.M.Karamzin (1766-1826, "History of the Russian State", "Poor Liza"), I.V.Goncharov (1812-1891, novels of "Oblomov", " The Precipice"), P.V.Annenkov (1813-1887, memoirs, he edited the first major edition of Pushkin's works in 1855.), N.M.Jazykov (the poet 1803-1846). Here was born and drew pictures known artist A.A.Plastov (1893-1972).
In 1864 the terrible fire in Simbirsk was 9 days . After which there was a fourth part of a city whole. The Soviet power became second "fire" for a city. By 1940 in a city there was one temple. To a socialist revolution there were 2 monasteries, 3 big beautiful cathedrals, 46 churches.
Now in Ulyanovsk (Simbirsk) lives more than 600 000 persons. In the central part of a city have remained somethe historical places connected with imperial Russia and an epoch of the USSR .
